Chavez denounces unjust imprisonment of the Cuban Five
Ahora.cu / 02-12-2005
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez accused Washington of unfairly holding five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters in jail while US authorities protect the notorious terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.
In his opening speech at the First Iberoamerican Meeting of Cooperatives taking place in Venezuela, Chavez pointed out that Posada Carriles was the mastermind behind the bombing of a Cubana airliner in 1976 that killed all 73 people on board.
Chavez said Washington is now protecting the most dangerous terrorist of all times; the man who was the chief of the Venezuelan secret police and who led a group of kidnappers that practiced torture and were responsible for hosts of "disappearances."
"Imperialism is increasingly being exposed for its immorality and is facing the outbreak of internal and external crises," said the Venezuelan president, noting that the international political scenario is experiencing certain changes.
He warned that US authorities consider the world as their own backyard, but "the world is ours; it belongs to the people" Chavez stressed.
The five Cubans which Chavez referred to are being held in US jails for having infiltrated Miami-based terrorist organizations for which Luis Posada Carriles had often been a key organizer of sabotage against the island.
